About our presenter:  Emina McLean -  Lecturer, Researcher, Educator

Emina is an Australian language and literacy expert. She holds qualifications in speech pathology, adolescent counselling, youth mental health (psychiatry), public health, and education, and she is currently completing her PhD (Education). She is a Primary English leader, instructional coach, professional learning provider, education consultant, lecturer, and researcher.  Emina works with systems, schools, leaders, and teachers to develop ambitious and rigorous assessment, curriculum and instruction practices in English and literacy.

Emina is a Research Expert with the Oxford Children’s Language Australia group and author of the recent Australian Education Research Organisation’s report, ‘Writing and writing instruction: An overview of the literature’. Emina frequently partners with key stakeholders such as AERO, ACARA, AITSL, Catholic Schools NSW, Learning First, NESA and VCAA. Locally, Emina has partnered with the Department of Education and Training Victoria on key projects and initiatives over the past five years. She is currently working with South West and North East Victoria Regions to build the capacity of system, network and school leaders to implement impactful assessment, curriculum and instruction practices in Reading.

In 2022 Emina was named one of 52 Australian newsmakers by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age for her contributions to Education and she won the Learning Difficulties Australia Mona Tobias Award for her research and practice contributions in the literacy domain.

About the webinar:  Getting spelling education right.  Assess, monitor, teach.

For teachers and speech pathologists. This professional development keynote presentation will focus on the essential skills to improve student spelling outcomes and maintain gains over time.

Emina will outline what we know about how students learn to spell, and detail how to deliver explicit, systematic word-level instruction and intervention. There will be a focus on assessment and progress monitoring, teaching the essential skills of blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds in words, teaching students how speech maps to print, sight words, and structured word inquiry methods for the teaching of morphology.
